Ondoy, 21st Century Philippine’s Great Deluge

AP Photo by Mike Alquinto

In the newspapers today, articles have attached how people have been retelling the story of Noah and The Great Flood or Noah and The Ark. Definitely, Ondoy or Ketsana is almost the reenactment of the old Bible story.

What happened September 26, 2009 was devastating. We all woke up to the heavy sounds of the rain on our roof and the water rising inside our households. Some of us suffered darkness despite the time of day. Electricity was cut off on some parts of Metro Manila to provide safety. Communication was also barred. So It was so hard to send messages through text. I was sending messages to some friends who were residing in Bulacan, Marikina and some parts of Manila with slight feeling of guilt. Texting or asking them through online messengers (some of them were online)   “How’re you doing there?” was the only thing that reason told me to do upon that time. But I know the replies would be the same that they’re not fine at all.

For the whole day, families who were lucky to be in places with none of those havoc have confined themselves in the comforts of their intact homes. They’ve got themselves doing the same routine on that weekend despite the weather. I kind of feel the unfairness.

From the results of the survey that has happened yesterday on the damage, 80% of Metro Manila is submerged in water. There are 300,000 plus who are displaced from homes and families; some are missing; some are still stuck on their roofs.  We’ve heard of stories of a Jeepney driver who got himself stuck in Quiapo-ilalim and died; of UERM grounds were the cars were all toppled by the gushing in of flood water; of the San Mateo Bridge surfers and their unfortunate state thereafter; of office-workers who could not come home to their families with old and young people huddled together in the cold night; of celebrities and politicians who were also helpless; of the fragile:  babies and the old-aged people surviving the harsh and biting cold; of students who remained in school for their safety; of people who just couldn’t do anything at all but swallow the grief painfully. There were institutions that were also unable to provide them fully the help they wanted. There are people who have not been given the rescue they’ve all sought out for. To everyone who extended their help, they were almost on the verge of submitting themselves to helplessness but tried to have alternatives.

We are in a state of gloom. This must have been how Noah  felt seeing all the people suffer because of their selfishness. We know that not everyone deserves the state they are in today.

I am well aware that there are people who don’t believe in prophetic judgments. So here goes:

This might not be all about the likeness of the story of Noah because the reality is that this is a consequence of our irresponsibility towards our environment. We’ve actually been told about a lot of the combinations on how and why we experience great calamities. It is very elementary.  This is an aftermath of pollution, kaingin, and bad habits. We’ve heard this all over and over again, yet we are apathetic to take responsibility.

There will be greater floods in the future. This is the first of them for my generation.

A parting question: “Will we still want to remain the same after the Great Deluge?”
